Vocabulary: Clothes in Turkish and Azeri (Azerbaijani)

Today’s blog post is about vocabulary again, this time the words for some items of clothing in Turkish and Azeri (Azerbaijani), two closely related Turkic languages. For those of you speaking Russian, note the Russian influence on Azeri vocabulary (e.g. Russian галстук and Azeri qalstuk).

Interesting to see the Russian influence on Azeri. And “galstuck” comes from German “Halstuch” (“neckerchief”), while the Turkish word comes from French.

thanks for your comment and for pointing out the similarity to the German word – actually, I had never noticed this relationship with the German word before… 🙂

You see some of these borrowings in Russian, but I see more of them in Ukrainian. “To paint” in Ukrainian is “malovaty” from German “malen”, as opposed to Russian “kracit'”. Another is “to cost”: Ukrainian “koshtuvaty” from German “kosten”, as opposed to Russian “stoit'”.

yes, these I have noticed too 🙂 I find these visible relationships between languages one of the most interesting aspects of learning languages – they tell so much about history and cultural encounters and contacts 🙂
